What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient discipline created in India to quiet the fluctuations of the mind by reducing pain in the body and helping the breath to flow more freely. At the same time, the body becomes stronger, more flexible and more balanced while the mind learns to be less affected by stress.

How is Iyengar Yoga unique?

B.K.S. Iyengar teaches that the route to understanding the mind and spirit is through the physical body. Precise alignment of the body is vital to the practice of yoga. Alignment frees the body from pain and reduces the risk of injury. He pioneered the use of props such as blocks, blankets and bolsters to help each individual approach the yoga postures without strain.

This new concept in practice makes yoga more accessible to a wider population, including the elderly and people working with chronic conditions or rehabilitating from injuries. In Iyengar yoga you respect the body you have today as you build strength, flexibility, balance and self-awareness in small steps.

Recommendations for Yoga Practice

  • Arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow time to set up and settle in before class begins, more if you are attending your first class.

  • The center is equipped with blocks, blankets and mats; you can bring your own mat if you choose.

  • Dress in loose, comfortable clothing. Instructors would like to see body lines and knees to help you with posture.

  • Do not eat for 2 hours before class.

  • Drink plenty of water before class.

  • Classes begin promptly, be on time.
