| ER&D
is a professional development program developed by the American
Federation of Teachers (AFT). All ER&D courses are based on
scientific
research that has been translated for classroom application. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), provides funds to states and school districts to support high-quality professional development programs based on scientific research. The aim of such programs is both to increase the number of highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals, and to raise student achievement. AFT's Educational Research and Dissemination (ER&D) program is based on proven practices and meets the NCLB criteria for high-quality professional development. ER&D courses provide high-quality professional development for teachers, support for new teachers and training for mentors. AFT's ER&D Program consists of courses providing training in: classroom management reading mathematics parental involvement behavior management teaching to standards |

| In
2002 the
BEA sponsored three members to attend training
seminars in AFT's ER&D Program. They became certified
instructors and offered the first ER&D course, Foundations of Effective Teaching I,
in Billings in the fall of 2003. During the summer of 2004, the BEA & School District 2 sponsored six additional members to attend AFT's ER&D training to become qualified to teach ER&D courses. These six members completed their training in January 2005. They are certified to teach courses in Thinking Math, Reading Comprehension, and Managing Anti-Social Behavior. These ER&D courses and Foundations in Effective Teaching I are offered through School District 2 Community Education and can be taken to fulfill teachers' professional development requirements and to earn step-up credit, college/graduate credit, and OPI units. |
